Our Mission
Our order began in 1937 when the Vicar Apostolic of Southern Nigeria, Archbishop Charles Heerey, was moved to compassion and realized that he needed many hands to relieve the suffering of the people of the region. Almost all were mired in severe poverty; ignorance, malnutrition, poor medical care and abuse of women and children were widespread. Establishing the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Mother of Christ, the nuns are charged to bring the love and compassion of Christ to the people, especially women and children, and raise them to the dignity accorded to children of God.
Our Story
In 1967, we Sisters began our first mission outside Nigeria, in Kenema, Sierra Leone. We have expanded to other African countries, Europe, and the United States. We are in 16 countries of the world.
Members of our order have become a familiar sight in Freeport, in our distinctive blue habits. Now we are embarking on a mission to serve women facing unprepared motherhood and empower them to shape a positive future.
